Irwin J. Cohen,
Of Counsel
Irwin J. Cohen is "Of Counsel" to The Abramson Law Group. He has been a part of the firm since 2004. He has successfully represented commercial and residential owners and building managers at all trial and appeal levels in the State Courts, as well as before the administrative agency tribunals of the New York City Department of Housing and Community Renewal, District Rent Office and other local City and State agencies.
Mr. Cohen has an extensive and varied litigation background. He started his career as an associate attorney with the New York City Conciliation and Appeals Board (C.A.B.) where he became familiar with rent regulations, and he thereafter acquired a thorough and practical knowledge of civil court procedures and appeals as an associate with two landlord-tenant litigation firms. Next, as “in-house counsel” to a mid-size real estate owner-developer, he acquired an understanding and familiarity of the intricacies of property management, article 78 proceedings, federal rent subsidy programs, local tax incentive programs and labor arbitrations.
As an associate at Finkelstein, Borah, Schwartz, Altschuler and Goldstein, and at Shaw & Binder, P.C., he engaged in all phases of Supreme Court litigation, and appellate work. Finally, as a private practitioner, he handled a variety of real estate transactions and civil litigation matters.
Mr. Cohen has represented landlords in all stages of contested civil actions, protracted rent strikes, business disputes and commercial lease negotiations; and he is acutely aware of the multi-faceted problems confronting building owners—for whom he has proven his ability to achieve favorable legal solutions and decisions.
Mr. Cohen received his Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School and B.A. Cum Laude from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Mr. Cohen is admitted to the New York State bar, and to the United States District Court, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. One of his notable published decisions: Chopra v. Prusik, 9 Misc. 3rd 42, 801 N.Y.S. 2d 692 (A.T. 2d Dept., 2005).
